The first day I arrived in my Thai village I was taken out by the faculty for a wonderful meal
and a lot of Thai whiskey. At the end of the meal, the headmaster joined us as we walked
back to what would be my new home for the next two years. Once at the house, the headmaster
officially welcomed me to his village. Somehow I had the courage to place a microphone from
my tiny battery-operated tape recorder in front of his mouth as he spoke and, thus,
managed to record the entire welcoming speech.
